Winter in London

Spending Winter in London

Christmas may have come and gone, but winter is set to stay in the UK for a little while longer yet. Some may feel a little hostile to the cold weather, the icy roads and lack of colour in the air – but for those who enjoy a wintery atmosphere, there is no place better than London.

Tourists from all over the world flock to the UK’s capital whatever the weather. In fact, many actually prefer the city at this time of year – as there is incredible beauty to be found. If this is something you’re considering, then here is a short guide to spending winter in London.

Things to do

You certainly won’t be short of activities to keep you busy, whenever you decide to go. One of the big advantages about visiting in the earlier parts of the year is the ice rink at Alexandra Palace. You can get in for under £10 and spend as long as you like gliding across the ice, with your friends and/or family.

Or, if the cold weather is a little too much for you, then there are countless extraordinary museums located around the city. You have the Natural History Museum or the Science Museum, both full of interesting exhibits that will keep the whole family entertained.

Another option is the Sea Life London Aquarium, home to a wide variety of fascinating animals. It has the largest collection of global marine life in all of Europe, and is based right in the centre of London. You can see sea creatures such as the seahorse, octopus and even the zebra shark.

Places to Shop

London is obviously well known for its limitless shopping options, and that is no different in the winter. From department stores and shopping centres, to markets and hidden gems – it really does have everything you could ever want or need.

The likes of Harrods and Harvey Nichols are popular choices, as they offer some excellent wintery products. The markets too have some great items that you would never have even thought of buying until you saw them – including food. Our favourite is the Borough Market – which has a range of meats, fruit & veg and delicious bakery goods.

Things to Eat

Speaking of food, eating some exquisite treats is a great way to keep warm, and there’s nothing better for that purpose than hot chocolate. The Brits are well known for their sweet tooth and this is reflected by the high quality of hot chocolate on offer.

Chocolatier establishment Melt is a peoples favourite and can be found in the Notting Hill area. They’re currently encouraging guests to beat the January blues with one of their fine chocolate buttonettes. A great way to start a cold winter morning.
