Are you heading to the Mediterranean this summer but aren’t sure which ports are worth a visit? Or perhaps you love to visit different ports, and will decide the destination of your trip depending on the port? You might even be looking for a job at one over the summer, and Silver Swann Yacht Crew could help you to find the perfect one in the perfect location for you. Whatever your reason for looking, here are some of the top, must see ports in the Mediterranean.
Venice, Italy
The historic Italian city of Venice has so much to offer visitors, but the port is a truly outstanding feature. Experts say that, not only is visiting the city a ‘must’, but arriving or leaving it by boat is an unforgettable experience. The city is great for everyone: sightseers, shoppers and port enthusiasts alike.
Mykonos, Greece
As well as its reputation for lively nightlife, the Greek island of Mykonos is home to one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful ports. It makes a great place to unwind of an evening, relaxing in a nearby café as you watch the sunset and listen to the sound of native fishermen organising their day’s work.
Valletta, Malta
Whether you are arriving into the port of Valletta by boat, or simply exploring it by foot, you will not be disappointing; the views are breathtaking. Tall stone fortresses the colour of honey will catch your eye upon first sight as they look like huge sandcastles! Once you have arrived in Valletta, you will also find lots to do, from visiting museums to sampling some local cuisine in the city’s restaurants.
Santorini, Greece
Whatever your reason for visiting the port of Santorini, the reality will live up to your expectations: it is truly idyllic. Of course, the weather in Santorini is bound to keep everyone smiling, but so will the charming traditional tavernas and the opportunity to take a donkey ride to the top of the mountain to take in a wider view of the port.
Villefranche-sur-Mer, France
If the idea of the French Riviera alone isn’t enough to attract you to Villefranche-sur-Mer, then perhaps its port is. Its bay is one of the deepest natural harbours of any port in the Mediterranean and there is definitely a reason that it is one of the most called upon cruise ship ports in the whole of France. Enjoy a glass of wine by the port as you listen to the gentle lapping of the waves in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Today, it is hard to imagine that, during the Croatian War of Independance, this seaside city was attacked by Yugoslavian troops. You can see how the 900 year old city has recovered from the effects of war as you stroll through the beautiful streets towards the picturesque harbour. It has earned the nickname, ‘The Pearl of the Adriatic’, and you can see why, as Dubrovnik has been compared to Venice, but without the water.
We are spoilt for choice with the number of beautiful ports in the Mediterranean, but don’t just take our word for it- go see them yourself!
