How to Travel Internationally with Kitchen Knives

It may not be a question you think about often but when the time comes to travel and you need to take your best kitchen knife sets with you, just how can you accomplish it without being pulled out of the line and the airport international departures.

There are many reasons why you may need to travel with your kitchen knives, you could be a chef travelling to a cooking demonstration or you could be going on a family holiday to a self catering villa and need knives. Whatever the reason don’t fret, travelling with your kitchen knives is not as difficult as you may think.

With all of the strict policies and hurdles international flight carriers make you jump through you may be left thinking that you won’t be able to travel with you knives, but that is not the case.

The easiest way to fly with your kitchen knives is to pack them in your checked in luggage (the luggage that goes in the cargo hold). Now you have a couple of options here, you can place them loosely in your luggage bag but to be honest this is not the best solution due the fact that they could pierce the bag and hurt and injure someone or cut a custom officers hand whilst a spot check is being carried out.

The second option and the best option would be to wrap each knife in cardboard and tape around each knife blade so that it is fully covered and the point of the knife is not visible. This will ensure that the knives will not accidently cut anyone and will stop the chance of them poking out of your luggage.

Then place each knife inside of your luggage bag (the bag that will be checked in at the airport and the bag you will NOT see until you reach your destination) and wrap with loose clothing like a sweat top of jumper again this is to help to stop the knives from moving whilst they are being transported.

Most professional chefs have a knife bag or often termed a knife roll for moving their kitchen knives around safely. For international travel this would be the BEST option as a kitchen knife bag lets you safely stored each individual knife in its own pocket or section in the bag and will stop the knives from moving around. This knife bag (or roll) can then just be placed inside your checked in luggage.

If you have an expensive set of kitchen knives and you are worried about them getting lost or misplaced whilst travelling internationally don’t worry there is one more option that will put you mind at rest.

For those of you have an expensive collection of the best kitchen knives and those knives are your pride and joy why not ship your knives by a reputable courier company like Fed Ex. You can wrap your kitchen knives as described above but let a courier company do the rest of the work shipping them and you will be covered by insurance if any mishaps do happen.

So there you go, I told you it was easy than you thought. So now you know how to travel with your kitchen knives it’s time to book that well deserved holiday.
