If you’re planning a visit to Scotland this year, you really must explore the stunning landscapes of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, which encompass the majestic Mountain and Glen Ben Nevis. Why? The mighty Ben Nevis sits there! Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Standing at 4409 feet (1344 metres), it towers over the surrounding mountains and sea lochs.
To climb Ben Nevis does require a certain level of fitness, taking around 8 hours, but the view from the summit on a clear day is simply stunning! You can see Glen Coe, the town of Fort William itself and even across the Irish Sea to Ireland!
www.mountainandglen.com are the leading provider of Ben Nevis guided walks in Scotland. Under the watchful eye of their professional mountain guides, as you journey through the stunning landscapes of Mountain and Glen Ben Nevis, they will look after you every step of the way!
The route to the summit starts in Glen Nevis (where scenes from Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart” were filmed) and follows the well trodden “Pony Path”, so called as it was built in the 1880s for the ponies which carried stores to the manned observatory on the summit plateau. This is now no more than a badly derelict building, nestled amidst the beauty of Mountain and Glen Ben Nevis. However, the path remains. The Victorians built a hotel around the same time, and its remains are still visible. Descent is via the same route. You also have the option to extend the walk. This allows you to view the spectacular 2000 feet high “North Face” of the mountain from a different angle!
Why do you need a guide? Mainly for safety; snow cover remains significant well into the Summer months, which can disguise many dangerous gullies. In addition the summit plateau can be difficult to navigate in misty conditions, which are pretty common on Ben Nevis. All of Mountain and Glen Ben Nevis’s guides are locals who possess a deep understanding of the flora, fauna, and history of the mountain, ensuring they can adeptly respond to any questions you may have during the walk.
Former Royal Marine Commando, Jim Coughlan, formed Mountain and Glen in 2005. Since that time they have guided literally thousands of people in the British mountains, Ben Nevis in particular. With a reputation for safety you’ll know you’re in good hands!
