Governor General’s House
Government House is the official residence of the Governor-General of Saint Lucia. The house is located on the crest of Morne Fortune, near Castries.
The first Government House that was built on this site was destroyed by a hurricane in 1817, before its completion. A second house, built of timber, was completed on the same spot in 1819. This house fell into disrepair, and was abandoned by 1865. Government House then relocated to a nearby disused military barracks.
Construction of the present brick-built Government House was started on the site of the previous house in 1894, and was completed in 1895. It was originally used as the home and office of the Commissioners of Saint Lucia until 1958, then for the Administrators of the island. From 1967, Government House was used by the Governors of Saint Lucia, and since Saint Lucia became an independent state in 1979 it has been used by Governors-General.
Stop at tranquil and picturesque Marigot Bay to experience the lovely scenery and some homemade spice rum.
Marigot Bay is located on the western coast of the island, 3.75 miles southwest from Castries. It is surrounded on three sides by steep, lush vegetated hills.
The inland portion of the bay forms a hurricane hole, used to shelter boats from hurricanes.
Marigot Bay is a historic landmark, having been the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies.
The bay was used as the setting for the 1967 film adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Do little books. Scenes of the shipwreck, Great Pink Sea Snail, and the construction of the harness for the Giant Lunar Moth were filmed in the bay.
The American novelist James A. Michener famously described Marigot Bay as “The most beautiful bay in the Caribbean.”
Drive through a native Banana Plantation, The largest in St. Lucia
After Marigot Bay, you will drive through the Roseau banana plantation. Banana is St. Lucia’s main export crop. At the plantation, you will be given the banana 101 crash course and get a chance to sample St. Lucia’s local bananas.
The Roseau Valley in St. Lucia is home to the island’s largest banana plantation. The Roseau River runs through the valley and enters the sea at Roseau Bay. Originally the valley had been used for the cultivation of sugar cane. More recently, it is a major production area for bananas.
There is still a distillery at Roseau and it has produced several prize-winning rums like chairman’s reserve and Admiral Rodney.

Mineral baths
The waters flowing within the park and within the pools are ranked as highly as the waters of the Baden Baden in Germany, Yellow Stone Geysers and Hot Springs in Wyoming, USA and Onsen Ryokan, in Japan and are world renowned for their ability to reduce stress, cure rheumatism, psoriasis and other skin ailments. In fact, in 1784, under instructions from King Louis XV1 of France, samples of the mineral saturated water emerging from Sulphur Springs were analyzed in France and found to possess similar medicinal properties to the waters of the Aix-les-Bains. Consequently, baths were built by Baron-de-Laborie, the French Governor of St. Lucia (1784 to 1789), at Diamond Estate, 1 km north-west of Sulphur Springs Park. The original Diamond Baths were destroyed during the Brigand War that followed on the heels of the French Revolution (1789-1794), but, were rebuilt by the owners in the early twentieth century. These baths today sit within St. Lucia’s largest and best kept botanical gardens and are themselves a tourist attraction.
