If hiring a yacht is new to you, you might be in need of some advice on how to get the best out of your time spent on the boat. Of course, advice will differ depending on whether you plan to spend your entire trip on the yacht or just a small part of your holiday, but here are some top tips to keep in mine when you hire a yacht in the Mediterranean. Likewise this article is helpful if you are considering a yacht crew job with a company such as Silver Swan Yacht Crew.
Pack Light! (Or as light as possible!)
As with most holidays, it is best to keep any luggage you bring to a minimum! Obviously you will want to have clothes for unexpected weather, but you should check the forecast as close to your trip as possible (and look at monthly averages) and pack according to that, bringing perhaps one or two jumpers in case of cooler weather! If you are planning to spend most of your time sunbathing on the yacht, you won’t need much more than a swimsuit and some sun cream! However, if you are more likely to be exploring the areas you sail around, suitable footwear and t-shirts and shorts would be more appropriate.
Get Insured
Even though your holiday is bound to go swimmingly, you can never be too safe! Ensure that your travel insurance covers the type of sailing you will be doing in your yacht, just in case anything were to go wrong! You might find that your regular holiday insurance will cover yacht hire, but, if you know you will be hiring your yacht before you depart, check first! The Direct Gov website can provide travel insurance advice.
Plan For Your Provisions
As with clothes, you don’t want to bring more provisions than you need- or worse, you don’t want to not have enough! If you know your sailing route passes different restaurants at which you might want to try local cuisine, or if your route passes supermarkets so that you can top up provisions, you don’t need to take quite as much with you before. However, if you aren’t planning to eat out much, or are unsure of how easily you will have access to shops, you need to be prepared! Similarly, if you are bring children (particularly younger children) you may need extra sunscreen or insect repellent.
Get the children involved
If you are travelling with children, involve them not only in the physical aspects of sailing, but the technical aspects, too! This will help to keep them interested and might spark a passion for sailing in them, and it also means you get a helping hand.
Obey the rules
Obviously, rules are put in place for a reason and straying from them could put yourself and other people in danger. Make sure that everyone on board your yacht is aware of basic safety rules before you set off! However, abiding to the rules (such as wearing suitable shoes that won’t damage the yacht) means you can avoid any unnecessary charges for damages.
