If you’ve been hoping to get away from it all and head off to a destination that is warm and tropical, you don’t have to head off the to the Caribbean, South America, or Australia. There are plenty of tropical destinations and island getaways throughout the United States that many people are unaware of. Continue reading for a list of some favourites.
Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island is found off the western coast of Florida, and it is one of the most popular island destinations in the state. It is well known for the many beautiful shells on its beaches, its tropical atmosphere, and its slower, more laid-back pace. Nature lovers will thoroughly enjoy the J.N. “Ding Darling” National Wildlife Refuge and Bird Sanctuary, as well as the beaches.
This island is great for family getaways, but it is also renowned as a romantic destination for couples, so don’t be surprised if you run into a lot of weddings and honeymooners during your stay. And because it’s in Florida, be prepared for hot temperatures and bright sunshine, so don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and Red Hot Sunglasses.
Cumberland Island
Cumberland Island is located in Georgia, and it features peaceful, gorgeous white sand beaches, particularly throughout the Cumberland Island National Seashore. This is also the biggest coastal island of Georgia, and the southernmost of all of the islands in the state.
Once you arrive, be prepared to relax and recharge, as this island features a few of the least developed beaches in the United States. The slower pace will definitely be welcomed if you have been stressed by the hectic chores of everyday life at home. And once you’re done with the beach, you can also venture into the island’s nature reserves and marshland.
Hawaii
No list of tropical destinations in the United States would be complete without mentioning the gorgeous islands of the state of Hawaii. And with so many pristine islands to choose from, you may consider island hopping while you are there to take in as much of the state as possible.
Two notable destinations include Waikiki Beach, which is located in Honolulu, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, found on the Big Island, where you can explore the active volcano, Kilauea.
Key West
Key West is yet another famous island in Florida. It is the westernmost island in a chain of islands off the southern coast, and you can easily drive to it from the mainland. Watching the sunset over the water is a nightly ritual, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to check out. You can also explore the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.
With so many great destinations to explore throughout the US, you can enjoy a much-needed tropical getaway in the sun and on the sand without having to spend a lot of money travelling to other parts of the world. And the best part is the mainland isn’t too far away, which means you can extend your trip and check out even more sights if you wish.
