Italy is a magnificent country that everybody should visit at least once in their lives. It is everything you would expect from a mediterranean country and more. The coastline features beautiful beaches, and the people are friendly and welcoming. A significant part of the Italian economy relies on the tourist industry and they go out of their way to encourage you to return there.
As you are aware, the capital of Italy is Rome. It is a place steeped in history, and there is a lot to discover during your stay. The Roman empire covered a massive swathe of Europe in the past, and they left behind tantalising clues to their way of life. Here is why you should think about Rome as a holiday destination this year.
Luxury Accommodation
There are many hotels to welcome you to the fine city, or you could find accommodation in Rome with Housetrip or another provider of holiday apartments. Some people find it hard to relax in a hotel environment. I feel as if I must always be on my best behaviour and dressed up to the nines. Sometimes I like to ‘slob’ about in the evenings; I’m sure you do too.
Vatican City
Those who are of the Catholic faith will undoubtedly visit Vatican City. You never know; the Pope might be on the balcony when are there. That is unlikely to happen unless it is a publicized part of his itinerary, and the square will be full in that event.
The Sistine Chapel awaits your discovery here. You have seen pictures of the ceiling fresco painted by Michelangelo, one of the greatest artists of all time. The pictures don’t do it justice; you must see it to believe it. The painting took many years to complete and is one of the great wonders of the world in my opinion.
The Colosseum
The ruins of the mighty colosseum dominate the city still. Imagine how impressive such a structure would have been back in antiquity. The people would have stood in awe as they viewed the monolithic structure. The emperors knew that the only way to rule was to give the people what they want, and blood sports played a significant part of it. There are stories about Christians being fed to the lions, and that might be true. Archeologists have recently discovered that the Romans used to flood the Colosseum to re-enact sea battles of the past. That must have been a magnificent sight to see.
Museums And Galleries
It isn’t all about ancient history in Rome; there are many modern attractions for you to enjoy. The National Museum Of Art from the Twenty-First century is an impressive building. It covers over twenty-six thousand feet and is dedicated to contemporary art. I think it is well worth a visit, but allow plenty of time to see all of the exhibits.
