Drive through and take in the highlights of Capital of St. Lucia, Castries

Enjoy brief history of the city and people of St.Lucia; you will see the Castries food and craft market, Derek Walcott Square in the heart of the capital city, Castries. In the square there is the burst of the two St.Lucian Nobel prize winners  and a large Samaan tree locally know as the “Massav” tree, which is said to be over 400 years old. The Central Library is to the western end of the Square, and at the eastern end is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with beautifully painted murals by local artiste Sir Dunstan St. Omer.

See the beautiful view of the north of St. Lucia from Morne Fortune view point

Stop at Morne Fortune view point to take in the view of the scenic Castries harbor northern western Coast of St. Lucia.

Morne Fortune is Located a high elevation on the southern end of the Capital, with a panoramic view of the city, the Castries Harbour, The airport, and some of the northern communities in St. Lucia. On Morne Fortune view point you will be standing alongside the historic Government House.

Governor General’s House

Government House is the official residence of the Governor-General of Saint Lucia. The house is located on the crest of Morne Fortune, near Castries.

The first Government House that was built on this site was destroyed by a hurricane in 1817, before its completion. A second house, built of timber, was completed on the same spot in 1819. This house fell into disrepair, and was abandoned by 1865. Government House then relocated to a nearby disused military barracks.

Construction of the present brick-built Government House was started on the site of the previous house in 1894, and was completed in 1895. It was originally used as the home and office of the Commissioners of Saint Lucia until 1958, then for the Administrators of the island. From 1967, Government House was used by the Governors of Saint Lucia, and since Saint Lucia became an independent state in 1979 it has been used by Governors-General.

Stop at tranquil and picturesque Marigot Bay to experience the lovely scenery and some homemade spice rum.

Marigot Bay is located on the western coast of the island, 3.75 miles southwest from Castries.  It is surrounded on three sides by steep, lush vegetated hills.

The inland portion of the bay forms a hurricane hole, used to shelter boats from hurricanes.

Marigot Bay is a historic landmark, having been the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies.

The bay was used as the setting for the 1967 film adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Do little books. Scenes of the shipwreck, Great Pink Sea Snail, and the construction of the harness for the Giant Lunar Moth were filmed in the bay.

The American novelist James A. Michener famously described Marigot Bay as “The most beautiful bay in the Caribbean.”

Drive through a native Banana Plantation, The largest in St. Lucia

After Marigot Bay, you will drive through the Roseau banana plantation. Banana is St. Lucia’s main export crop. At the plantation, you will be given the banana 101 crash course and  get a chance to sample St. Lucia’s local bananas.

The Roseau Valley in St. Lucia is home to the island’s largest banana plantation. The Roseau River runs through the valley and enters the sea at Roseau Bay. Originally the valley had been used for the cultivation of sugar cane. More recently, it is a major production area for bananas.

There is still a distillery at Roseau and it has produced several prize-winning rums like chairman’s reserve and Admiral Rodney.

Find local craft and experience local delicacies at Anse La Raye and Canaries

These two fishing villages are a must stop on St. Lucia private tours. They are rich with St. Lucian culture and tradition. First you stop at the fishing village of Anse La Raye to enjoy viewing & shopping for local craft. Anse La Raye is the first of two fishing villages situated in Midwest heading south; home to the Friday night “fish Friday”. Next, enjoy a scenic drive to Canaries where you will stop for more photo ops and craft shopping; Canaries is the second fishing village on the way to Soufriere.

Visit the town of Soufriere

We then head to Soufriere, one of three towns in St.Lucia. Leaving the forested hills, the road descends into the town with the most panoramic views of the bay, pitons etc; Soufriere was St. Lucia’s first capital during French control of the island. Just outside of the town centre you will find the breathtaking and refreshing Toraille waterfall, the botanical garden and diamond falls, mineral baths. Soufriere is the most scenic town in St. Lucia and has most of the sightseeing and touristic assets and attractions; A St.Luica visit is incomplete without going to Soufriere

Learn about the flora and fauna of St. Lucia at the Toraille Botanical Gardens or the Diamond falls and botanical Gardens

An experience guide will walk you through the various trails and walkways as they lead you through the lush greens and flamboyant colors of this tropical paradise. You will be told of the scientific names, local names and applications for the various fruit trees and spices, e.g. the spice nutmeg and our very own local natural Viagra tree “BOIS BANDE”.

These spots are like the imaginary paradise of creative people writers, poets’ photographers.

Mineral baths

The waters flowing within the park and within the pools are ranked as highly as the waters of the Baden Baden in Germany, Yellow Stone Geysers and Hot Springs in Wyoming, USA and Onsen Ryokan, in Japan and are world renowned for their ability to reduce stress, cure rheumatism, psoriasis and other skin ailments.  In fact, in 1784, under instructions from King Louis XV1 of France, samples of the mineral saturated water emerging from Sulphur Springs were analyzed in France and found to possess similar medicinal properties to the waters of the Aix-les-Bains.  Consequently, baths were built by Baron-de-Laborie, the French Governor of St. Lucia (1784 to 1789), at Diamond Estate, 1 km north-west of Sulphur Springs Park.  The original Diamond Baths were destroyed during the Brigand War that followed on the heels of the French Revolution (1789-1794), but, were rebuilt by the owners in the early twentieth century.  These baths today sit within St. Lucia’s largest and best kept botanical gardens and are themselves a tourist attraction.

Enjoy a visit to the Sulphur Springs,  Drive-in volcano

In Soufriere you will discover The Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano
The well-known Sulphur Springs in Saint Lucia is the hottest and most active geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles. The park is approximately 45 hectares and is billed as the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano. A walk through the crater takes you past pools and hot springs bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. Just outside the Springs, you can bathe in the warm sulphuric pools, reputed for its soothing effects. The Sulphur Springs forms part of the story of the creation of the entire Caribbean basin.

Fill young smooth and rejuvenated after a  Surlphur Springs black water pool bath/Mud Bath

Black Water Pool/Mud Bath

Just beside the park’s entrance is our famous Black Water Pool.  Built in 2004 and refurbished in 2009, this area boasts a natural open air hot water pool, sitting area, hot and cold water showers and changing rooms.  You can feel free to dip your feet in this black mineral-rich pool or if you’re more adventurous take a full bath in its 38.7oc (101.6 Fahrenheit) waters.

View the MAJESTIC PITONS, A UNESCO world heritage site

The Pitons, also located just outside the town of Soufriere are the most recognizable symbol of St. Lucia. They are one of the most visited, photographed treasured landmarks in the Caribbean. Our local Piton Beer is named after this landmark. The Pitons are a spectacular sight and the symbolic backdrop for photographing visitors and locals alike. Gros Piton is (2,619 ft) and the Petit Piton is (2,461 ft).As proof you were on St. Lucia you must take some photos with the piton as the backdrop.
